The Tomsk State University (TSU) has completed selection of project teams that will join the GenerationS BiotechMed Track acceleration program. The teams that made the shortlist will receive two weeks of high-intensity training, after completing which 10 of the best teams will present their projects to Russian and international investors at the Open Innovation Forum in Moscow.
The best 40 BiotechMed projects were short-listed in the course of a pre-acceleration weekend. After two days of training, the participants delivered their presentation before a panel of experts in a pitch session. The pre accelerator included two rounds: one in Tomsk, at the Tomsk State University business incubator, and one at API Moscow. Experts had the opportunity to evaluate 80 projects during the two rounds, with 28 experts evaluating just the technology-related aspects of BioTechMed projects.
“The shortlist of 40 projects included those which the expert panel evaluated highly on such metrics as business prospects, the team quality, depth of technology development,” TSU Deputy Vice-President for Science Olga Babkina said. “Some very strong and interesting projects didn’t make the shortlist because the project teams either could not present their solution convincingly or prove that there was a market for their idea, while others failed to make an effective and compelling convincing presentation that would explain the essence of their idea to the expert panel.”
Ultimately, teams from 16 cities were named among the top 40 project teams. More teams come from Moscow, Tomsk, St. Petersburg, Kemerovo and Perm than from any other city. Two startups hail from each of Novosibirsk, Biysk, and Belgorod, while Ulan-Ude, Nizhniy Novgorod, Cheboksary, Vladivostok, Saratov, Khabarovsk, Omsk and Almaty have added one startup team each to shortlist. The majority of projects on the shortlist have to do with medicine: the making of medical products, devices, medications, disease diagnostics, and associated software. Seven projects on the shortlist deal with biotech solutions.
The BiotechMed acceleration program offered to the 40 best project teams is essentially a 17-day high-intensity training course. Over this time, startup entrepreneurs will be exposed to 50 speakers and 10 mentors. The acceleration program will also include eight in-person and teleconference meetings with Russian and international investors, the participants will also be integrated into Talk2VC, an interaction venue for entrepreneurs and investors run by RusBase, and also into StartTrack, RAVI project (and the associated Acceleride Day), as well into Triple Helix and Pharmaceuticals and Medical Products international forums.
The organizers will use project descriptions on the shortlist to write investment teasers for venture capital funds with a focus on biomed. A mentor – a practicing business professional working in the biomedtech industry – will be assigned to each project team that makes the list after two selection rounds, helping the best teams to prepare effectively for a meeting with prospective business partners and investors.
The acceleration program will culminate in the Demo Day: the participating teams will present their projects to experts and investors on September 23. The best 10 teams will ha et the opportunity to join a coaching session in Moscow and present their projects to Russian and international investors in GenerationS Final at the Open Innovation Forum.
