Four Russian cities welcomed a series of the nationwide GenerationS 2014 contest’s IT Track acceleration events between August 2 and 17. The series lasted for 10 days between those dates, spanning Moscow, St. Petersburg, Yekaterinburg and Novosibirsk and featuring 26 different events. The 80 project teams selected for this year’s GenerationS acceleration program were joined by 150 more IT startups for open Weekend Activities.
Each city hosted an open mentoring session at which the participants had an opportunity to receive advice and feedback from seasoned businesspeople, investors, and experts in marketing, sales, PR, business planning, idea validation, product development and product launches on international markets.
As many as 57 mentors joined the Weekend Activities, including Alexander Borodich (of VentureClub), Dmitry Kalaev (of FDII), Pavel Pravdin (Founder Institute), Alexey Kostarev (of Giftoman), Andrey Yarykh (of Kaspersky Lab), Vladimir Suvorov (of ЕМС), Vadim Sukhomlinov (of Intel), Marina Rossinskaya (of Maxfield Capital), Yevgeny Barulin (ResumUP), Yevgeniya Smorodnikova (of Likehack), Dmitry Sysoev (2gis), Dmitry Pangaev (of BUBUKA), Fedor Skvortsov (Aurigma), Gleb Tertychny (Telefacer), Grigory Dernov (e96), Mikhail Smolyanov (Megaplan), Askar Rakhimberdiev (of Moi Sklad), Liliana Pertenava (of Runa Capital), GenerationS 2013 winner Denis Sharov (Appercode) and others. The mentors had more than 300 one-on-one meetings with entrepreneurs participating un the contest.
The Weekend Activities included five Traction Meetings, a format that brought small groups of project teams together with trackers to receive feedback, formulate their hypotheses and set the objectives for the next stage of the acceleration program. Web Ready participants gad an additional opportunity to test their business models for robustness and submit it for expert review during a StartupLynch.
The Weekend Activities in Moscow included a Fundraising Day — a pitch session by investment fund officers, strategic investors, development institutions, business angel communities and crowd-funding facilities. Each speaker took five minutes to tell the participants about one capital-raising opportunity for their IT project.
All-in-all, 13 speakers delivered their pitches, including Nikolay Dmitriev (representing Rostelecom), Dmitry Kalaev (of FDII), Alexander Borodich (of VentureClub), Ruslan Tugushev (Boomstarter), Mikhail Kharuzin (of the RVC Seed Investment Fund), Alexey Kostrov (Moscow Seed Fund), Lubov Simonova (representing Almaz Capital Partners), Sergey Eremin (Microsoft Seed Fund) and others.
Each of the Weekends was augmented by master classes and case studies by 15 successful entrepreneurs. Participants found the presentations on who should and should not be brought in to run a business by InfoWatch CEO Natalya Kaspersky and on a business organization’s path from idea to IPO by Levenhuk Group CEO Anton Epifanov. Alexey Kostarev, Director of Giftoman, told the participants four stories about mistakes startup founders make, the consequences and lessons to be learnt.
Georgy Mikaberidze, co-founder of Healbe and a Web Ready 2012 finalist, has shared the secrets of success of his GoBe project, for which he was able to raise US$ 1 million through crowdfunding. Alexander Semenov, President of KORUS Consulting Group, shared his experience in building up sales effectively, while Maxim Chebotarev, head of the FDII Investors’ Club, told the audience where to look for money to raise for a startup, what kinds of investors are out there, and what they expect from investable projects.
“We are getting the impression this year that literally the whole country is involved in GenerationS,” says Gulnara Bikkulova, Director for Innovation Markets at RVC. “Regional partners have helped the operators of specific sector tracks to collect applications for the acceleration program, and are now supporting events for the applicants. These events are held every week in different cities across the country, bringing together the entire innovation community from their respective regions: entrepreneurs, mentors, experts, and investors. This strong level of collaboration is one of the key results of GenerationS, and certainly everybody is going to benefit from this.”
The best projects selected during the acceleration program will go on to participate in the Web Ready Investment Forum to take place at Skolkovo Hypercube on October 8, 2014. The forum will feature a VC corner, a venue where project teams would have an opportunity to meet investors, project expo and project pitches, a Startup Lifehack discussion with winners in the Growth category and an awards ceremony. The investment forum is expected to bring together approximately 700 guests, including more than 100 investors and business angels.The winners will attend a coaching session with serial entrepreneurs on October 10 through 13 at API Moscow Red October, and will have an opportunity to present their projects to investors at the Open Innovation Forum on October 15. The Web Ready contest offers RUB 1.5 million in prize money. GenerationS offers the winner an additional RUB 5 million.
