A “Carousel of Experts” session in Novosibirsk was the latest regional event of the BioTechMed Track aiming to identify and engage startups in GenerationS acceleration program. The Novosibirsk event brought together 16 teams which received two hours of non-stop consultations, expert comments, and advisory on the viability of their projects, their commercialization opportunities and on promoting their ideas and designs from experts — founders and managers of Academ Park’s successful resident companies.
Oleg Malsagov, Director of the Tomsk State University business incubator and organizer of the GenerationS Contest’s BioTechMed sector track, said that new entrepreneurs just starting out absolutely need to get feedback from more seasoned, experienced businesspeople.
“The nationwide GenerationS program aims primarily to support ideas and projects which can become a working business going forward,” Malsagov said, “and this is why we have held master classes and workshops at the regional sites provided by BioTechMed partners where startup entrepreneurs and project teams had a chance to justify their viability in relatively harsh, demanding conditions.”
Malsagov said that the BioTechMed Track educational program that will be open only to 40 select projects shortlisted after expert assessment will also be full of innovation commercialization master classes led by business coaches and experts in the field.
Alexander Vasenev, leader of the Regional Business Factory who also represented the Intellectual Property Rights Protection Agency and was an expert at the “Carousel,” believes that biomed projects need expert support more than ever because “[these projects] take a lot of time to implement, and not every team has the ability to wait for the idea to pay back [the original investment], to start making money.” The expert is sure that the GenerationS acceleration program is an effective tool for helping startups to address the issues they face in commercializing their ideas. For example, this the case when a team has an advanced scientific idea, but they do not know how to “package” it as a business project. Or, if we are talking about a finished product, the team may not know how to scale up their business and bring in as more customers.
Some of the teams which have participated in the “carousel of experts” have already applied for participation in the GenerationS contest, and are prepared to go to the end of the contest and win.
“The acceleration program creates opportunities for a project to find new business partners and be evaluated by some of the best experts in the field. “We believe in ourselves and will fight to win the final prize in Moscow,” a “Carousel” participant representing SibNeuro team and company.
