GenerationS presents a report on the role of middle managers in the business processes of companies

GenerationS, a corporate innovations development platform, presented an analytical report on middle managers, their place in innovation activities of companies and the role they play in improving business processes. The document is based on the analysis of expert materials on the topic on the Russian and international markets, partner’s cases and GenerationS own expertise. This is the fourth public report of GenerationS, summarizing the experience of Russian and international partners of the platform. The experts who took part in its preparation answered the question of why and how this category of employees, which in most cases is not given much attention, can influence the work of a company and change it for the better.

As GenerationS experts noted, the need for such a study was felt by large companies and especially HR specialists who are looking for growth points for business and promising areas for working with employees. The results of the study showed that medium-sized management can become the main resource for generating and implementing innovations, offering new ideas and approaches, as well as working effectively with startups.

The report includes cases of GenerationS Russian and foreign partners who shared their experience in involving middle managers in the development of an innovative business direction. Among them are Credit Bank of Moscow (MKB), Lenta, TMK Group, BP Launchpad, Orange Innovation and others. The report covers the topics below:

  • Who belongs to the category of middle managers, the main characteristics and advantages of their position.
  • What is an innovative leadership style and innovative business thinking.
  • Barriers in innovation processes at the level of middle managers.
  • Training and competent motivation for successful innovation.

The cases presented in the study, as well as the opinions of the experts, confirm that middle managers play an important role in the life of modern companies. They serve as bottom-up conductors of innovative ideas in the structure of a company, and then realize a top-down implementation of innovations that will pass the filter of top management.
