From electronics to ice cream: what products were exported by Moscow in 2021

Last year, metropolitan companies delivered their goods to 183 countries of the world.

From January to October last year, Moscow's supply of non-resource non-energy products reached $26.59 billion. This is 29.5 percent more than the same period in 2020 and almost 34 percent more than the same period in 2019.

“Moscow is the main Russian exporter of non-resource non-energy goods. Thus, in January-October 2021, its share in all-Russian exports amounted to 17.5 percent. During this period, Moscow delivered goods to 183 countries in the amount of $26.59 billion, which is 29.5 percent more than in the same period in 2020. The number of countries purchasing Moscow goods is also growing every year,” said Vladimir Yefimov, Deputy Moscow Mayor for Economic Policy and Property and Land Relations.

According to him, Kazakhstan holds the first place among the main importers of the metropolitan products — goods worth $2.71 billion were delivered there. The second place belongs to Belarus, which purchased Moscow products worth $2.59 billion, the third — to the United States ($2.33 billion), the fourth — to Germany ($1.46 billion), the fifth — to China ($1.36 billion).

“In the structure of non-commodity non-energy exports, 88 percent of Moscow's deliveries abroad are industrial products. In 10 months of 2021, companies sold their goods for the sum of $23,4 billion. Thus, the volume of the metropolitan exports increased compared to the same periods in both 2020 and 2019 — by 33.1 percent and 33.7 percent, respectively,” Alexander Prokhorov, head of the Moscow Investment and Industrial Policy Department said.

He added that Moscow increased the supply of mechanical equipment and machinery, electrical devices and communication equipment, optics, instruments and medical equipment, as well as cosmetic products.

Medical equipment, agricultural products, confectionery

In the first 10 months of 2021, the metropolitan exports of mechanical equipment and machinery grew by almost 29 percent to $2.21 billion. Electrical devices and communication equipment were supplied for $1.33 billion, which is 39.6 percent more than in January-October 2020.

In addition, metropolitan companies sold medical equipment worth nearly $90 million, which is 31.6 percent more than in the same period of 2020. Export of cosmetic products increased by 27.7 percent and amounted to $357.05 million.

Agro-industrial exports also showed positive dynamics. For 10 months, it amounted to 3.19 billion dollars, which is 7.8 percent more than the previous figures.

According to the Mosprom export support center, chocolate, flour confectionery, ice cream, soft drinks and sausage from Moscow are especially popular among foreign consumers.

How the city supports exporters

The Mosprom Center provides individual support for industrial and agro-industrial exports. This organization is subordinate to the Department of Investment and Industrial Policy of Moscow. Its experts analyze target markets for metropolitan manufacturers and also help companies to search for contractors and negotiate with potential buyers abroad for free. This work is carried out as part of the buyer program based on the specific needs of the enterprise.

Manufacturers are also supported by the Moscow Export Center (MEC) subordinated to the Department of Entrepreneurship and Innovative Development. It helps entrepreneurs to promote their products to foreign markets. One of the key tasks of the MEC is to increase the number of Moscow exporters and implement projects for the effective development of their foreign economic activity.

In 2021, it helped medical enterprises to participate in Africa Health and Medica specialized international exhibitions and funded all business events.

At the Medica exhibition in Düsseldorf, Moscow companies presented their products at the Made in Moscow joint booth in person. For Africa Health they organized an online business mission. An online business mission was conducted for cosmetics manufacturers as part of the Intercharm Korea exhibition. In addition, 10 Moscow cosmetics brands with the support of the MEC will be able to sell products in the Chinese city of Chengdu at the Russian Commodities Pavilion.

Moscow electronics manufacturers took part in business missions with partners from India, Belarus, Qatar, Finland, Armenia and other countries. The Moscow Export Center financed the organization of negotiations and the services of translators.

High-tech and IT companies were funded up to 90 percent of participation in acceleration programs. They were held jointly with the Moscow School of Management Skolkovo, the Foundation for the Development of Internet Initiatives, GenerationS, GVA and other specialized organizations.

In addition, manufacturers of finished products have a whole range of online export support tools, including sales on foreign marketplaces with a contract guarantee. Thus, with the support of the city, companies can start trading on such Internet platforms as Tmall, Epinduo.com and Taobao.com, JD.com, Pinduoduo.com, 1688.com, Etsy.com, Kaufland.de, Dtad.de.
